New Edition

The White House: Its Historic Furnishings and First Families, now back in print for its second edition, tells the story of the historic objects in the White House.
A symbol of the nation for more than two-hundred years, the White House has been home to every president and his family, except for George Washington. John and Abigail Adams were its first residents, but Washington had left his mark by selecting the site and approving the design. Each family since has been encouraged through regular congressional and private funds to make it a comfortable home and to acquire furniture and decorative art to fulfill the White House’s role as a nexus of ceremony and entertaining. As a result, the furnishings in the White House cover a wide range of genres, all rich with historic association. This award-winning book is an ideal read for any lover of American history or decorative arts.
The new edition of The White House: Its Historic Furnishings and First Families features photography, never before published, of the White House rooms from the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations. New White House acquisitions highlighted include State china services and a rare photograph of the White House draped in black for the mourning of President Abraham Lincoln.
