This letter opener was inspired by the saber commissioned by French volunteers in the American Revolution for President George Washington. Made at the Klingenthal Amory in Alsace, France, the gilded brass, mother-of-pearl and steel saber was never presented to President Washington, who died before it was completed. The French government possessed the saber until 1933, when they donated it to the White House Collection. The letter opener features the design from the saber’s eagle-head pommel and an American eagle at its handle.
