Abraham Lincoln served as the sixteenth president of the United States during the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865. In 1869 artist Geroge P.A. Healy portrayed Lincoln in this pensive, listening pose inspired by his earlier painting, The Peacemakers. The portrait now hangs prominently in the State Dining Room of the White House.
