The South Front of the mansion is more decorative than the North Front - it is banded by tall vertical wall-columns, or pilasters, which continue around the east and west sides. The South Portico with its double open-armed stairs, was completed in 1824 during James Monroe's presidency. With the exception of the slender second-level balcony built by President Harry Truman in 1948, the South Portico is the only alteration to the South Face of the house since 1824.
