The White House Historical Association’s new, exclusive retail collaboration with renowned designer Anna Weatherley, the White House Gardens Collection, is inspired by flowers from the White House Rose Garden. Individual pieces feature meticulously painted tulips, Martigon lilies, columbines, and violas. Known for her delicate, masterfully painted floral pieces, Weatherley’s work also features butterflies, hummingbirds, dragonflies, and delicate insects. The tulip mug is made of porcelain and hand-painted by master painters in Weatherley’s Budapest, Hungary studio. Based in Arlington, Virginia, Weatherley designed the collection after carefully studying the many varieties of flowers featured in the seasonal Rose Garden redesigned by Rachel Lambert Mellon for President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Weatherley was selected in 2009 by First Lady Laura Bush to create a hand-painted “casual” presidential china service, featuring a magnolia blossom pattern. It is used as an informal setting in the White House private quarters. She has also created pieces for the Prince of Wales Foundation in the United Kingdom.
