Additional Information
Gilbert Stuart painted this oil on canvas portrait of President George Washington in 1797. It was the first work of art purchased for the White House. Thanks to its famous rescue by First Lady Dolley Madison, it survived the burning of the White House by the British in 1814 and it now hangs in the East Room of the White House.
