The giant pandas, Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling, depicted on this ornament, were given to the American people by China in honor of President Richard M. Nixon's visit in 1972. In the fifty years since they arrived, China has loaned a succession of giant pandas to the United States. The presence of the pandas at the National Zoo in Washington D.C., was a beloved attraction for generations of visitors.
