Additional Information
The Aquia, Virginia, sandstone that makes up the exterior walls, embellishments, and window surrounds of the White House was shaped and carved by skilled stonemasons who sailed from Scotland for the project. Sandstone from the historic Aquia quarry was also used to create this challenge coin. It was President George Washington who directed that the President's House be built of stone, and he took special delight in the fine carving produced by the Scots.
