The vibrant colors of Resurrection, created in 1966 by Alma Thomas, recall the techniques used in Pointillism and Abstract Expressionism. A notable member of the Washington Color School, which was known for its Color Field paintings, Thomas was an educator and artist in Washington, D.C., for most of her career. The first painting in the White House Collection by an African American woman, Resurrection was a gift of the White House Historical Association in 2014 and first displayed in the Family Dining Room during Black History Month in 2015.
