Chosen for its great strength, majestic beauty, long lifespan, and for being native to the United States, the bald eagle became a national symbol when it was selected by Congress to appear on the Great Seal of the United States on June 20, 1782. Today the eagle is portrayed on many objects in the fine and decorative arts collection displayed throughout the White House.
