Born in Burlington, Vermont, on January 3, 1879, Grace Goodhue graduated from the University of Vermont in 1902 and taught at the Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, Massachusetts. She met Calvin Coolidge in Northampton. They married on October 4, 1905, and raised two sons John and Calvin. When her husband became vice president in 1921, she became a popular woman in Washington, D.C., society. After her husband ascended to the presidency following the death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923, she earned the country’s respect as first lady and became a popular White House hostess. She also supported various causes as first lady, working as a Red Cross volunteer and advocating for the Clarke School. After leaving the White House in 1929, the Coolidges returned to Northampton. Following her husband’s death in 1933, Mrs. Coolidge sought a private life, avoiding publicity. She passed away on July 8, 1957, at the age of seventy-eight.
