Product description
American artist Katharine Barnwell was inspired by the vibrant decor found in the State Rooms of the White House to create the whimsical set of topiaries featured on this set of cards. She drew from the jewel tones and iconic motifs associated with each historic room in composing this unique collection of original paintings. The Red Room has been decorated with its bold red colors since 1845, during the presidency of James K. Polk, and is currently furnished in the American Empire style reminiscent of the early nineteenth century. The Blue Room, one of three oval rooms in the White House, features the French Empire style selected by President James Monroe in 1817. Lastly, the Green Room was intended by the builder of the White House, James Hoban, to be used as the "Common Dining Room." Thomas Jefferson used the room for this purpose and over the years, presidents and first ladies have used the room to entertain guests. The Green Room is now decorated in the style of the Federal period and includes pieces of furniture attributed to cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe.
