The Magnificent Entrance to the People's House
The White House belongs to the American People. For more than two hundred years special guests of the presidents have been welcomed through the ornately embellished North Door, which opens into the Entrance Hall. Completed in about 1796, this entrance is considered to be the most magnificent example of the stone carver's art surviving from early America. It was President George Washington who determined that the public buildings of the new capital would be built of stone, and he arranged a lease of the Aquia sandstone quarry in Stafford County, Virginia, some miles below his own farm, Mount Vernon.
The initial difficulty in finding stone masons was at last solved by bringing skilled craftsmen from Scotland, some from the Highlands and others from Edinburgh. None of the carved ornament is applied, but cut into the face of stones especially shaped for their particular locations in the exterior wall. Bands of intricately carved oak leaves, acorns, roses, and fierce griffins frame the wooden fan-light window sash. Pilasters and acanthus consoles flank the double mahogany doors beneath a sumptuous swag of Scottish roses and oak leaves.
Wipe clean with soft cloth.
