Tom Freeman's painting captures a scene from Christmas Eve 1941, when the national Christmas tree was lit at the White House just weeks after the U.S. entry into World War II. Despite tight wartime security, thousands attended a joyous ceremony at the White House, which included a concert by the Marine Band and caroling around the illuminated tree.
