Product description

The South Grounds of the White House have rolling lawns and groves reserved for the first family's private use. The South Front of the mansion is more decorative than the North Front - it is banded by tall vertical wall-columns, or pilasters, which continue around the east and west sides. The South Portico with its double open-armed stairs, was completed in 1824 during James Monroe's presidency. With the exception of the slender second-level balcony built by President Harry Truman in 1948, the South Portico is the only alteration to the South Face of the house since 1824. The south wall of the White House is mostly original, having survived the 1814 British invasion and fire.
