The special connection between Ireland and White House history dates back to 1792 when James Hoban was named the winner of the architectural design competition for the President's House. Born in County Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1755, Hoban attended the Dublin Society School of Architectural Drawing and gained building experience through work on the Royal Exchange, the Newcomen Bank, and the Custom House before immigrating to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1787 he relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, where he became known by reputation to President George Washington. From 1793 to 1800, Hoban oversaw the construction of the President's House. He returned in 1814 to supervise the rebuilding of the house after it was burned by the British, and returned again in 1824 to build the South Portico, and again in 1829 to build the North Portico.
The ancestry of nearly half of the forty-seven U.S. presidents can be traced to Ireland. On St. Patrick's Day, for more than seventy years, the Irish government has celebrated the relationship between the U.S. and Ireland with a bowl of shamrocks, presented to the U.S. president by the Irish ambassador or the prime minister.

Founded in 1961 by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the White House Historical Association is the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization entrusted with preserving and sharing the history of the White House. The Association is able to fulfill its mission to share White House history through the support of private philanthropy and the sale of our educational books and products. As a continuation of our education mission, the Association also operates The People’s House: A White House Experience, a free, immersive, educational museum in Washington, D.C., which welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
