The White House is the official residence and workplace of the Presidents of the United States. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., in Washington, D.C., and has been the residence of every U.S. President since John Adams in 1800. Designed by architect James Hoban more than two hundred years ago, George Washington selected its location, although he is the only President never to live there. Thomas Jefferson updates many of its features for convenience; James Madison and James Monroe rebuilt it after it was burned in the War of 1812; Theodore Roosevelt restored and remodeled it for more efficient use; and Harry Truman renovated it with modern features hoping to preserve it forever.

Founded in 1961 by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the White House Historical Association is the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization entrusted with preserving and sharing the history of the White House. The Association is able to fulfill its mission to share White House history through the support of private philanthropy and the sale of our educational books and products. As a continuation of our education mission, the Association also operates The People’s House: A White House Experience, a free, immersive, educational museum in Washington, D.C., which welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
